Introduction

The Alternative Energy CPU involves the study of alternative energy resources and technologies, including hybrid engines, hydrogen fuel cells, biofuels, wind energy, hydropower, solar energy, and nuclear power. A brief look at conventional electricity generation is also given. Basic principles of matter and energy and the environmental effects of energy production guide students through their study of the increasingly important topic of alternative energy.

Students study the property of atoms and matterBy completing this CPU, students will gain an understanding of the many types of energy that can put to use by humanity and how technology has aided us in doing so. Students will see that there can be a trade-off for energy use in the form of pollution or other negative effects to the environment. Students are left to decide for themselves what is an appropriate price for each method. They are encouraged to compare and contrast current means of energy generation with the alternative methods this course highlights. While a lot of hard science is presented in the course, students will have many opportunities to see this data applied and demonstrated through several hands-on activities, including the construction of a model windmill, watermill, and solar powered device.
